Modern medicine has been a predominantly male profession. Ironically, the first healers were probably women, and the drugs they used were the seeds, leaves, berries and bark they collected for food. Their unique biology and hormonal cycles -- the fact that they menstruate and bear children -- made it all the more important for them to have a basic understanding of herbal medicine.
