Heimia salicifolia (Sun Opener, Sinicuichi)

Hemia salicifolia is a flowering shrub that grows from Mexico to Argentina and is widely cultivated through its range.

Hemia salicifolia has a Shamanic tradition dating to the Aztecs. The leaves were crushed, mixed with water and allowed to ferment for a few days, making a nice-tasting tea called Sinicuichi. The effect of the Sinicuichi tea was a euphoriant and a brightening/yellowing of vision, hence the name "Sun Opener." Sinicuichi is also thought to give the ability to recall past events with great clarity.

Note: We had a wholesale customer request an extremely large quantity of Sinicuichi 30x powder and enhanced leaf extracts. After 6 weeks of harvesting and manufacturing, they decided they no longer wanted it (and had insisted on only paying on delivery). So we now have way too much of a product we don't even normally carry. As a result, we are offering it below cost just to recoup some of our investment.

Thousands of indigenous people of the region use Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine in sacred religious and healing ceremonies, as part of their traditional religions.

Calea zacatechichi (Dream Herb, Leaf of God)

Dream Herb was traditionally used by the Chontal Natives of Oaxaca, Mexico. It would be prepared as a tea and drank while smoking a cigarette made up of the Calea zacatechichi foliage just before going to bed.

Those who partook of the Dream Herb were able to experience lucid dreaming; the ability to control and remember their dreams with less effort. Auditory hallucinations are also fairly common, which prompted the Chontals, believing they were hearing the voice of God, to refer to Calea zacatechici as Leaf of God.

Exactly how Dream Herb (Calea zacatechichi) effects the brain is not well understood. Modern studies have shown an increase in brain activity during sleep and some minor hallucinations of subjects when awake.

Is chocolate good for you? Numerous studies have suggested that the guilty pleasures of chocolate may not be quite so guilty after all. Cacao beans and nibs, the raw materials for making chocolate, are high in flavonoids, contain more antioxidants than most fruits and appear to lower cholesterol in people with high cholesterol. Of course, we know cacao as the source of chocolate, the decadently delicious, luxurious guilty pleasure. There are, however, some very good reasons that chocolate is a worldwide favorite food and flavoring, and scientists are discovering more of them every day. Among their discoveries: - Dark chocolate, which contains more cacao and less fats and sugars, can positively benefit the cholesterol profile - Cacao provides the same amount of antioxidant polyphenols as a glass of red wine - Cacao stimulates the production of natural antidepressants in the body, as well as containing its own stimulants, theophylline and caffeine- Cacao beans are rich in magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese and potassium. They are also a good source of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C, E and pantothenic acid

Cacao stimulates the production of serotonin and endorphins, and contains phenylethylalamine and anandamide, two chemicals that elevate the mood and help increase focus.

Safflower has been used as a laxative and as a dietary supplement to modify lipid profiles and treat fevers. However, clinical trials are lacking.

Some clinical studies have shown that safflower oil supplementation may be helpful in patients with cystic fibrosis, Friedreich's ataxia, and neurotoxicity from lithium. However, more study is needed in these areas before a firm conclusion can be drawn.

In traditional Chinese medicine, safflower is used to invigorate the blood, dissipate stasis, amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), pain, and traumatic injuries. It is also used to "calm" a live fetus and abort a dead fetus, and is therefore used cautiously during pregnancy.

Chia, is familiar to most of us as a seed used for the novelty of the Chia Pet, clay animals with sprouted Chia seeds covering their bodies. Little is known, however, of the seeds tremendous nutritional value and medicinal properties. For centuries this tiny little seed was used as a staple food by the Indians of the south west and Mexico. Known as the running food, its use as a high energy endurance food has been recorded as far back as the ancient Aztecs. It was said the Aztec warriors subsisted on the Chia seed during the conquests. The Indians of the south west would eat as little as a teaspoon full when going on a 24hr. forced march. Indians running form the Colorado River to the California coast to trade turquoise for seashells would only bring the Chia seed for their nourishment.

1 tbsp Rosemary
1 tbsp Almond extract
1 tsp Cinnamon
1 pinch Garlic skins
1 tsp Anise seeds
1 tsp Allspice
1 tsp Coconut extract
1 pinch Salt
Thoroughly grind all dry ingredients in a mortar and pestle.
Add liquid ingredients and mix thoroughly

Wooden Ethnic Yerba Mate Gourd

The name "Mate" derives from the quechaun word "matí" which means "vessel" or "glass" and was used by the Spaniards during the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata because it was easier to pronounce for them rather than the word "Caá-i-guá", the original guaraní voice that named the container that had the yerba mate water. That´s why the word "mate" became more popular to name the gourd that is traditionally used to drink the yerba mate infusion. The Yerba Mate Cup most commonly used is a gourd of the Lagenaria Vulgaris, a climbing plant which grows in the same region as Yerba Mate. Gourds were the earliest plant species domesticated by humans and were originally used by man as containers or vessels before clay or stone pottery, and is sometimes referred to as "nature's pottery". The gourd is put to dry and hollowed out. It can have several forms; poro, which has the form of a pear; galleta, which means cracker because it´s flat and round (galleta gourds are hard to find). Traditionally poro is used for sweet mate and the galleta for bitter mate or "Cimarrón" although of course it´s a personal matter.

In order to identify their own yerba mate cup, the Indians and the Spaniards started carving their names on it or they painted the mate. They also covered the yerba mate gourd with leather to protect it, especially in those provinces where it was difficult to get a mate gourd.
When the yerba mate gourd became a luxury good, the silversmiths started ornamenting it with all sorts of decorations. The whole vessel was then made of silver, keeping the form of the original gourd. Since the mate gourd cannot always stand by itself, the silversmiths created beautiful bases for them.

Wood vessels, bamboo tubes and gourd-shaped ones, made of ceramic or metal (stainless steel or even silver) are also common. Both the yerba mate gourd and the wood vessels require a special treatment (called curing) to get a better taste before being used for the first time and to ensure the long life of gourd.

Tips to Prevent Mold from Forming in Your Yerba Mate Gourd

It is common for a black or green mold to grow inside the gourd if it´s not left to dry properly between uses. Normally these moldy spots will appear 24 to 36 hrs after the gourd is left with moisture. Also the leaves sometimes leave a green tint to the inside of the gourd which is not mold but just a bleeding of the color of the leaves. When you have finished using your gourd for the day, it is very important that you rinse it well with warm water (no soap, please!!!) and dry it out well with a paper towel. Put another dry paper towel inside the gourd and let it thoroughly dry overnight. Also turning the gourd upside down overnight will help the moisture to be collected on the paper towel. If you still notice some moldy spots, you may rinse out the inside of the gourd with a little lemon juice, then plain water and let it sit out in the sun for several hours. Mold or tint will not harm you in any way nor will it make your gourd unuseable. It may change the taste of the mate and make it more bitter.
To sanitize the gourd as needed, fill the gourd with 150-degree water and a teaspoon of Peroxide. Let this sit for a few minutes, then empty the gourd, rinse, and let dry.

Uzara ( Xysmalobium Undulatum )

Uzara is an interesting plant extensively harvested in South Africa and has many interesting uses:

Medicinal:
The powdered root is used to treat wounds and abscesses. It is widely used in Africa and elsewhere, and sold in Europe as an anti-diarrhoeal under the name Uzura. In traditional medicine it is also used to treat headaches. Dry powdered root and extracts of the root are apparently an excellent remedy for painful menstrual cramps and have an antispasmodic action.

The root has been widely used for treating indigestion and malaria and other fever, including typhoid. An infusion is taken by mouth for malaria causing profuse perspiration.

Magical:
The plant is used as a protective charm to divert storms, and make dogs keen hunters.

The Zulu ground up the stem in water as an emetic in poisoning.

The Xhosa take an infusion or a decoction of the root for colic and abdominal troubles and use the powdered root as a snuff to relieve headache. They also apparently take wine in which grated root has been soaked, as a tonic and apply the latex to festering wounds as a prophylactic against the development of maggots. They also apply fomentations with the root to the chest for bad colds.

The Mpondo use a root decoction or the powdered root alone as a dysentery remedy.

The Nama take the root as a stomach carminative and diarrhoea remedy.

The Tswana chew a piece of the root as an antidote to the effects of food poisoning.

A cold water extract of the root has been used in the treatment of lumpy skin disease (âknoppiessiekteâ) in cattle.

Uzara came onto the pharmaceutical market in 1911 as a ânew intestinal sedative" (antidiarrhoicum). In 1927 another preparation made from the root was put on the market under the name dysmenural. This was a tablet containing amongst other the active compound uzaron. More recently Uzara has been recommended for diarrhoea and dysentery, after birth cramps and as a tonic to the cardiovascular system.

An interesting tidbit for you: One of the names of this plant is udelunina which literally means forsaking ones mother ( dela , to forsake; nina , mother). This refers to the use for the plant-if ingested by a girlfriend/boyfriend, that person leaves her/his mother and goes to stay with the partner.

It is one of the great mysteries of the universe: Do Hippies smell like Patchouli or does Patchouli smell like Hippies? Anybody that has ever been around either will know what the other smells like, though.

Patchouli is a fragrant herb, with soft, opposite, egg-shaped leaves and square stems, grows from 2 to 3 feet in height, giving out the peculiar, characteristic odour when rubbed. The dried leaves are commonly burned as incense or mixed with other incense blends.

Its use is said to cause loss of appetite and to help with sleep and nervous attacks. The Chinese, Japanese and Arabs believe it to possess prophylactic properties.

Uses
Perfume
Patchouli is used widely in modern perfumery and modern industry to scent products such as paper towels, laundry detergents, and air fresheners. Two important components of its essential oil are patchoulol and norpatchoulenol.

Medicinal
In several Asian countries, such as Japan and Malaysia, patchouli is used as an antidote for venomous snakebites. The plant and oil have many claimed health benefits in herbal folk-lore and the scent is used to induce relaxation. Chinese medicine uses the herb to treat headaches, colds, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Patchouli oil can be purchased from mainstream Western pharmacies and alternative therapy sources as an aromatherapy oil.

One study suggests patchouli oil may serve as an all-purpose insect repellent.
During the 18th and 19th century silk traders from China traveling to the Middle East packed their silk cloth with dried patchouli leaves to prevent moths from laying their eggs on the cloth.[citation needed] Many historians speculate that this association with opulent eastern goods is why patchouli was considered by Europeans of that era to be a luxurious scent. It is said that patchouli was used in the linen chests of Queen Victoria in this way.

Incense
Patchouli is an important ingredient in East Asian incense. Both patchouli oil and incense underwent a surge in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s in the US and Europe, mainly due to the hippie movement of those decades

Typha capensis, commonly called Bulrush or Love Reed, grows in wetlands throughout South Africa. Purported to be a libido lifter with the rhizomes being the most potent part of the plant.

The Love Reed is a male sexual tonic that also improves the circulation and blood flow to the area that matters. This enhances libido and male sexual potency.

Studies have shown that the phytosteroids in Typha capensis may be metabolized to an androgen beneficial to male sex drive and performance.

Gingko biloba or Ginkgo biloba

Gingko biloba is a unique large, fast-growing tree with no close living relatives. It is one of the best-known examples of a living fossil with recognisable examples of the tree dating back 270 million years.

Although Ginkgo biloba was once widespread throughout the world, the tree currently occurs in the wild only in the northwest of Zhejiang province in the Tianmu Shan mountain reserve in eastern China, but even its status as a naturally occurring species there is questionable as it is thought that it was probably planted and cultivated by monks there for over 1,000 years.

Ginkgo biloba has long been cultivated in China; some planted trees at temples are believed to be over 1,500 years old. Because of its status in Buddhism and Confucianism, the Ginkgo is also widely planted in Korea and parts of Japan.

Gingko biloba has many alleged nootropic properties, and is mainly used as a memory and concentration enhancer, and anti-vertigo agent. Gingko may have three effects on the human body: improvement in blood flow to most tissues and organs; protection against oxidative cell damage from free radicals; and blockage of many of the effects of platelet-activating factor that have been related to the development of a number of cardiovascular, renal, respiratory and central nervous system disorders. Preliminary studies also suggest that Ginkgo may be of benefit in multiple sclerosis, showing modest improvements in cognition and fatigue.

Desfontainia spinosa is a small holly-like evergreen shrub native to South America and used for medicinal and ornamental purposes. In Chile, it is known as Taique, in Colombia as borrachero ("intoxicator"). Colombian shamans of the Kamsa tribe take a tea of the leaves to diagnose disease or enter non-ordinary reality. Reportedly these practitioners would go crazy and shake all over. (Schultes & Raffauf, 1990). It is also reported that smoking it produces a relaxing dream-like state; others report a state similar to smoking salvia.

Little is as yet known of the chemical constituents; however, recently, spinosides A and B, two cytotoxic cucurbitacin glycosides have been identified from Desfontainia spinosa (Reddy et al, 1988).

This is a very interesting, easy and slow-growing monstrose of Lophocereus schottii. It is also known as Lophocereus schottii f. mieckleyanus.

It gets it's common name "Totem Pole Cactus" from the multiple lumps protruding all over the cactus, giving the illusion of faces carved into the plant.

We have a small amount of these rare and fascinating cactus. They come rooted in pots and are about 18-inches tall. Do not handle them with bare hands. Any part of the cactus that gets oils from your skin will quickly turn black and hard.

The Church?s inquisitions extracted this sacred knowledge from the local Shamans who were then exterminated?It is time to recognize the fact that this Pharmacratic Inquisition is still intact and destroy it.

Supplies limited. Banisteriopsis caapi seeds are always in short supply because of the unpredictability of their season. These seeds were just harvested from the Peruvian rainforest at the beginning of October! We didn't get many because their viability is so short lived, however. So order quickly and get them planted ASAP.

To grow Banisteriopsis caapi from seed, you should sow in a quality, well-draining soil as soon as you receive your seeds. Insert the seed head into the soil, leaving the “wing” sticking straight up. Keep the soil moist throughout germination. Covering with plastic can help maintain moisture, but make sure there isn’t too much water--standing water on the surface is too much. Allow 2 to 4 weeks to sprout.

Fresh Cree Acorus Calamus (Sweet Flag) Rootstock and Live Plants

We are very pleased and excited to offer what is known to the Cree Indians of Northern Alberta as "Weekas", better known as Sweet Flag. However this is not your typical calamus root here, these are freshly harvested rootstocks rich in asarone and essential oils, far more superior to the common dried root material. Our Cree calamus is the most aromatic and unique sweet flag root we have ever encountered.

Acorus calamus has been called the "coca of the north" for its stimulant properties. The stimulant effects of calamus are well known amongst many tribes but the reports of the rootstock's hallucinogenic properties originated from use by the Cree and other Northern Tribes, who would chew the fresh root. Hoffer and Osmond's 1967 account has been cited in many books since its publication as evidence of the plant's use as a native hallucinogen.

The Cree had numerous medicinal uses for Acorus calamus including an analgesic, to fight the effects of fatigue or exhaustion, to prevent and help cure a hangover and even claimed that chewing the fresh root enabled them to "travel great distances without touching the ground".

Because our Cree Calamus is extremely fresh, you may discover a new respect for Sweet Flag.

Tom Juul's Giant:
Trichocereus cv. Tom Juul's Giant

Other names/spellings include - Jewel?s, Juul's, Jules', Jull?s or Juel's Giant or simply abbreviated as TJG. (Trout).

Worshipped by an understudied Tribe of Indians in the upper deserts of Bolivia, the Trichocereus cactus, Tom Juul's Giant, is an extremely rare cactus that is sure to top off any collection.

This spectacular Trichocereus cactus is believed to be named after the Denmark native Tom Juul, who was a prolific collector of cactus specimens and old cactus and succulent literature. For this reason the correct spelling is thought to be Tom Juul's Giant.

The exact species name of the Juul's Giant is still unknown and debated but thought to possibly be a hybrid variety of Trichocereus pachanoi. Tom Juul's Giant has many similarities with San Pedro Cactus but it's fruit lacks the pubescent qualities of those produced by the San Pedro Cactus.

Juul?s Giant specimens as tall as 12 feet tall have been reported but this erect-columnar cactus generally grows to 10 feet tall with a 7 foot spread, branching at the base.

Although the cactus is said to be more robust in habit than the San Pedro Cactus, the branches may become fragile if allowed exposed to excessive wet or wind. It is suggested to keep them pruned to about 8 feet tall.

Tom Juul's Giants may begin to flower once a height of 3 to 4 feet is attained and is said to even be capable of flowering when planted in a pot. The Jules Giant produces large fragrant and showy white flowers with numerous yellow anthers.

Juul's Giant Cacti commonly have a "mottled" look to them--naturally-occuring scrapes and bruises.

MANDRAKE, OLD WORLD MANDRAKE Seeds

Mandragora officinarum L.;

Nightshade family (Solanaceae)

Ahh? The elusive and mysterious Mandrake root. A native of Southern Europe, the roots of Mandrake were supposed to bear a resemblance to the human form, on account of their habit of forking into two and shooting ?arms? on each side. In the old herbals we find them frequently figured as a male with a long beard, and a female with a very bushy head of hair.

Many weird superstitions collected around the Mandrake root. As an amulet, it was once placed on mantelpieces to avert misfortune and to bring prosperity and happiness to the house. It was also once believed that the Mandrake root would kill anybody that pulled it up, so harvesting the roots would be done very carefully on a dark night, usually by tying a rope around the base of the plant, hooking the other end of the rope to a goat and then making the goat run to pull up that plant. In this way, even if it wasn?t dark enough and the Mandrake was able to see who pulled it up, it would ?only? result in the loss of the life of a goat, rather than the death of the person.

Nowadays, whole mandrake roots are pretty much impossible to find. But, although rare, the seeds are sometime available, from which whole roots can be grown with a bit of care.

Cultivation and Propagation: The Mandragora officinarum is hardy. It likes a light, deep soil, as the roots run far down. They will do poorly in a soil that is chalky or excessively gravelly. If the soil is too wet in winter, the roots will rot. It is propagated from seed which should be sown in deep flats or, better, singly in pots. These should be kept well watered and when they reach a good size they should be carefully set out at least 2 feet apart.

Mandragora officinarum are tender perennials that cannot withstand frost and must be wintered indoors in cold climates.

Harvesting: The roots should be dug after the second or third year (at your own or your goats risk). If left in the ground they will grow to a great size, and will have large branching roots up to four feet long.

Note: Do not confuse this Old World Mandrake Seeds with the American mandrake or "mayapple" (Podophyllum peltatum), whose roots are sold by many herb companies under the name "Mandrake roots." Mayapple roots are a powerful cathartic poison. The plants are unmistakably different.

Several years later sassafras tea was banned, a ban that lasted until the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in 1994. Sassafras root extracts which do not contain safrole or in which the safrole has been removed are permissible, and are still widely used commercially in teas and root beers. Sassafras was a commodity prized in Europe as a cure for gonorrhea.

Health benefits
Rose hips contain vitamin C, some vitamin A and B, essential fatty acids and antioxidant flavonoids.
Particularly high in Vitamin C, with about 1700–2000 mg per 100 g in the dried product, one of the richest plant sources. RP-HPLC assays of fresh rose hips and several commercially available products revealed a wide range of L-ascorbic acid content, ranging from 0.03 to 1.3%.
An initial trial of a rosehip remedy called LitoZin showed possible benefits to rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.

Usage
Rose hips are used for herbal tea, jam, jelly, syrup, soup, beverages, pies, bread, wine, and marmalade.

A few rose species are sometimes grown for the ornamental value of their hips, such as Rosa moyesii, which has prominent large red bottle-shaped fruits.

Rose hips have recently become popular as a healthy treat for pet chinchillas. Chinchillas are unable to manufacture their own Vitamin C and lack the proper internal organs to process many vitamin-C rich foods. The primary use of papaya leaf in herbal medicine today is as a vermifuge, that is, to remove intestinal worms. Papaya leaf has less of the protein-dissolving papain than the fruit, so it is less likely to "dissolve" the worms, but it contains tannins that the fruit does not. These tannins protect the intestine from reinfection by "tanning" proteins in the lining of the intestinal wall so that worms cannot attach themselves.

The leaf contains beta-carotene, calcium, carpaine, fats, flavonols, niacin, papain, tannins, and vitamin C (in higher concentration in the leaf than in the fruit). The leaf, unlike the fruit, is not a source of the protein-dissolving enzyme papain, but the latex (sap) in the leaf stem is. Papain remains in leaf preparations that have been dried over low heat, but it may be destroyed in products that are dried at high heat.

Osha root or Ligusticum wallichii (Ligusticum) root can be steeped in ethanol (whisky, vodka, etc.) for at least a month. The resulting tincture is an effective, albeit pungent, liniment for sore muscles that can be stored (in a cool place) indefinitely.
