Desfontainia spinosa is a small holly-like evergreen shrub native to South America and used for medicinal and ornamental purposes. In Chile, it is known as Taique, in Colombia as borrachero ("intoxicator"). Colombian shamans of the Kamsa tribe take a tea of the leaves to diagnose disease or enter non-ordinary reality. Reportedly these practitioners would go crazy and shake all over. (Schultes & Raffauf, 1990). It is also reported that smoking it produces a relaxing dream-like state; others report a state similar to smoking salvia.

Little is as yet known of the chemical constituents; however, recently, spinosides A and B, two cytotoxic cucurbitacin glycosides have been identified from Desfontainia spinosa (Reddy et al, 1988).

Myrothamnus flabellifolius (Resurrection Plant/Bush, Vukwabafile)

Myrothamnus flabellifolius is a member of a group of plants collectively known as resurrection plants for their ability to fully recover after appearing to be dead for months, during periods of extended drought. These resurrection plants are found in a vast area stretching from Namibia, through Botswana, to Zimbabwe and the northern parts of South Africa. The plant grows between rocky outcrops with very shallow soils and for approximately half of the year it exists in a dehydrated quiescent state.

African natives commonly smoked the leaves of Myrothamnus flabellifolius for its pain-killing properties, often combined with tobacco or taken as a snuff known as `vukwabafile'.

Helichrysum odoratissimum is an extremely aromatic perennial herb used in South Africa, where it is commonly known as Imphepho or Kooigoed by KwaZulu-Natal natives.

While Imphepho is commonly used in treating coughs, colds, headaches and other ailments, it is most often used as visionary herb and sedative or to induce lucid dreams by smoking, often in combination with Tobacco, or Helichrysum odoratissimum is simply burned as nice, relaxing incense.

Banisteriopsis caapi Vine Live Plants

Thousands of indigenous people of the region use Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine in sacred religious and healing ceremonies, as part of their traditional religions.

It is the main ingredient in Ayahuasca, a sacred medicine used for millennia in order to enter the sacred supernatural world for healing, divination, and worship. To prepare Ayahuasca, sections of Banisteriopsis Caapi vine were boiled with leaves from a number of potential admixture plants such as Psychotria viridis (Chacruna) or Diplopterys cabrerana (Chagropanga, Chaliponga) to make the Ayahuasca.

Our Live Banisteriopsis caapi plants are 1 to 2 foot, established, rooted vine sections with new leaf growth. These are rooted sections from our 10-year-old caapi plants grown in Hawaii.

Here's a word-for word copy (minus most of the gramatical errors) of part of an e-mail exchange about these Ayahuasca plants. Pretty much says it all (change the channel if there are children in the room):

"A one foot vine with a huge, live root ball with 4 - 6 two-to-four-inch shoots coming out is in fact a nice plant to sell and receive. That in fact is a kicking-ass plant to receive. MUCH MUCH nicer that a 1 foot whimpy tendril attached to a little rootball. A one foot solid vine with a huge rootball and a several young tendrils kicks mother-fucking ass. You list em like I said and I'll edit it and add in the ass-kicking shit about how kick ass these fuckers are. These arent some wimp plants that have to be pussy footed with."

Recently there has been a lot of idiotic stories going around in the media about Colorado River Toad "licking" after a man arrested in Kansas City on drug charges had a toad in his apartment (A note here. He didn't buy it from us). After having reporters show up "live on the scene" at our shop, we want to make sure and clear up some things:

1. Toad licking is largely an urban legend, generally concerning The Cane Toad, Bufo marianus... and will not get you high or turn the toad into a prince. From Wikipedia:

Rumors, dating from the 1970s, claimed that groups of hippies or "teenagers" were licking the psychoactive toads to get high. One version of the story has hippies in the hills of California chasing toads through the woods to get high.In another version, the infamous cane toad of Australia was said to be licked or ingested both by aborigines and by Australian hippies. These stories were propagated by a number of sources, including drug-abuse lectures, at least one textbook, and USA Today in 1988. The idea of toad-licking was even used as a plot for one episode of the television programs L.A. Law, Family Guy and The Simpsons. The story was never true. While it certainly cannot be proven that no one has ever licked a toad in California, there is no documented evidence for toad-licking as a regular practice of any group at any time, nor is there any documented evidence that hallucinatory effects can be achieved in this way.

What?... you didn't really think it was true did you?

3. Licking a toad won't kill you. You may get salmonella and wish you were dead, but you won't die. (Like with any reptile or amphibian please wash your hands before and after handling your pet)

4. Your pet store would sell them if there was a market for them not because they're dangerous. They sell poison dart frogs (which are much more dangerous than Colorado River Toads) to 8-year-old kids. They're not concerned about the safety of their customer. They're concerned with making money and there just isn't much of a market for $150 toads.

So... Please dont lick the toads (or poison dart frogs).

We are very pleased and excited to offer what is known to the Cree Indians of Northern Alberta as "Weekas", better known as Sweet Flag. However this is not your typical calamus root here, these are freshly harvested rootstocks rich in asarone and essential oils, far more superior to the common dried root material. Our Cree calamus is the most aromatic and unique sweet flag root we have ever encountered.

Acorus calamus has been called the "coca of the north" for its stimulant properties. The stimulant effects of calamus are well known amongst many tribes but the reports of the rootstock's hallucinogenic properties originated from use by the Cree and other Northern Tribes, who would chew the fresh root. Hoffer and Osmond's 1967 account has been cited in many books since its publication as evidence of the plant's use as a native hallucinogen.

The Cree had numerous medicinal uses for Acorus calamus including an analgesic, to fight the effects of fatigue or exhaustion, to prevent and help cure a hangover and even claimed that chewing the fresh root enabled them to "travel great distances without touching the ground".

Tom Juul's Giant:
Trichocereus cv. Tom Juul's Giant

Other names/spellings include - Jewel?s, Juul's, Jules', Jull?s or Juel's Giant or simply abbreviated as TJG. (Trout).

Worshipped by an understudied Tribe of Indians in the upper deserts of Bolivia, the Trichocereus cactus, Tom Juul's Giant, is an extremely rare cactus that is sure to top off any collection.

This spectacular Trichocereus cactus is believed to be named after the Denmark native Tom Juul, who was a prolific collector of cactus specimens and old cactus and succulent literature. For this reason the correct spelling is thought to be Tom Juul's Giant.

The exact species name of the Juul's Giant is still unknown and debated but thought to possibly be a hybrid variety of Trichocereus pachanoi. Tom Juul's Giant has many similarities with San Pedro Cactus but it's fruit lacks the pubescent qualities of those produced by the San Pedro Cactus.

Juul?s Giant specimens as tall as 12 feet tall have been reported but this erect-columnar cactus generally grows to 10 feet tall with a 7 foot spread, branching at the base.

Although the cactus is said to be more robust in habit than the San Pedro Cactus, the branches may become fragile if allowed exposed to excessive wet or wind. It is suggested to keep them pruned to about 8 feet tall.

Tom Juul's Giants may begin to flower once a height of 3 to 4 feet is attained and is said to even be capable of flowering when planted in a pot. The Jules Giant produces large fragrant and showy white flowers with numerous yellow anthers.

Juul's Giant Cacti commonly have a "mottled" look to them--naturally-occuring scrapes and bruises.

MANDRAKE, OLD WORLD MANDRAKE Seeds

Mandragora officinarum L.;

Nightshade family (Solanaceae)

Ahh? The elusive and mysterious Mandrake root. A native of Southern Europe, the roots of Mandrake were supposed to bear a resemblance to the human form, on account of their habit of forking into two and shooting ?arms? on each side. In the old herbals we find them frequently figured as a male with a long beard, and a female with a very bushy head of hair.

Many weird superstitions collected around the Mandrake root. As an amulet, it was once placed on mantelpieces to avert misfortune and to bring prosperity and happiness to the house. It was also once believed that the Mandrake root would kill anybody that pulled it up, so harvesting the roots would be done very carefully on a dark night, usually by tying a rope around the base of the plant, hooking the other end of the rope to a goat and then making the goat run to pull up that plant. In this way, even if it wasn?t dark enough and the Mandrake was able to see who pulled it up, it would ?only? result in the loss of the life of a goat, rather than the death of the person.

Nowadays, whole mandrake roots are pretty much impossible to find. But, although rare, the seeds are sometime available, from which whole roots can be grown with a bit of care.

Cultivation and Propagation: The Mandragora officinarum is hardy. It likes a light, deep soil, as the roots run far down. They will do poorly in a soil that is chalky or excessively gravelly. If the soil is too wet in winter, the roots will rot. It is propagated from seed which should be sown in deep flats or, better, singly in pots. These should be kept well watered and when they reach a good size they should be carefully set out at least 2 feet apart.

Mandragora officinarum are tender perennials that cannot withstand frost and must be wintered indoors in cold climates.

Harvesting: The roots should be dug after the second or third year (at your own or your goats risk). If left in the ground they will grow to a great size, and will have large branching roots up to four feet long.

Note: Do not confuse this Old World Mandrake Seeds with the American mandrake or "mayapple" (Podophyllum peltatum), whose roots are sold by many herb companies under the name "Mandrake roots." Mayapple roots are a powerful cathartic poison. The plants are unmistakably different.

There are about 50 species of Burseras in the world. The dried sap of some of the species is sold as Frankincense. Bursera fagaroides develops a swollen trunk, and can be a spectacular specimen. It is one of the most common Burseras of Mexico, and is probably one of the most common in the trade, which does not mean that it is frequently encountered. They are easily trained as a bonsai.

Weber's Blue Agave (Agave tequilana azul) is cultivated in Mexico for the production of Tequila.

Agave plants are succulents with long spiny leaves. There are more than 400 species of Agave all native to North America and mostly to Mexico. They live for many years as a rosette of thick, fleshy leaves, then flower once (often around 30 years old or so) and die. However, by this stage they usually have produced a cluster of younger plants from stolons arising from the parent plant. Only the rosette that produces the flowering stem dies. The other Agave plants live on.

The beautiful Agave tequilana azul (Weber's Blue Agave) is the specific variety of Agave from which tequila is made, exclusively in the state of Jalisco, Mexico.

We offer live Blue Agave plants in two sizes. The "small" Agave plants are about 6-inces tall. The "large" Agaves are approximately 18-inches tall.

Trichocereus bridgesii is known as Achuma in Bolivia where it is grown both as a hedge plant and placed on top of walls as protection for gardens. It is a fast-growing columnar cactus grows 5 meters high, branching at the base.

In La Paz Trichocereus bridgesii was traditionally used as a sacrament by the Indians and was also popular amongst the young people "for its stimulating effects upon the psyche".

This unique and stunning cactus has grown to become our favorite Trichocereus species for it's character and spirit, and of course its formidable drooping four-inch-long spines.

Lagochilus inebrians (Inebriating Mint) has long been used for its intoxicating and sedative properties by Tajik, Tartar, Turkoman, and Uzbek tribesman and ancient Central Asian tribes used it during mysteries, feasts and holidays. Traditionally consumed as a tea.

Lagochilus inebrians is a narrow endemic species of the Uzbekistan flora and there are only a few places where it grows. It is rare and little know even within its small native region. As a result of its scarcity and also because of strict state control, it is virtually never seen in the outside world. Alchornea floribunda (Iporuru, Nando) is used in Gabonese religions where the root has a reputation as an intoxicant and aphrodisiac. Niando is said to provide a state of intense excitement followed by a deep, sometimes fatal depression.

Mimosa hostilis (Jurema, Tepezcohuite) is a perennial evergreen tree or shrub native to the northeastern region of Brazil and found as far north as southern Mexico.

Although Psychotria viridis (Chacruna) is more familiar and the most commonly associated admixture plant with the Caapi vine, Chaliponga is prefered by many ayahuascaros through the Amazon in Equador, Western Columbia and Northern Peru and actual use of Chagropanga in Ayahuasca may be more common than Chacruna, overall.

The alkaloid content of Chaliponga can be several times that of Chacruna and some tribes such as the Harakmbet believe that one must "graduate" to Ayahuasca with Chaliponga after four or five Chacruna-prepared Ayahuasca experiences.

Mucuna pruriens, a member of the legume family, is a climbing plant that grows up to 30 ft. in length. Mucuna pruriens forms compound leaves that grow 4-10'' long and is composed of three leaflets. The pods of the Mucuna pruriens contain 2-5 per cluster and grow 2-3 inches long. Each pod contains 3-6 large black seeds. The pods have barbed hairs, also called trichomes, that cause an intense stinging irritation to the skin. It is a very prolific and hardy plant in the South.

The Mucuna plant has many traditional and medicinal usage including treating abdominal pain, cholera, diabetes, infertility, Parkinson?s disease, scorpion bites, snakebites, and toothache. Because of the large amount of Levo-dopa in the seed it is used for treating Parkinson?s disease.

The Zulu names for Dioscorea dregeana are udakwa and isidakwa respectively mean ?inducing drowsiness? and ?a drunkard.? It is a profound sedative that is used to treat epilepsy, hysteria, insomnia and acute psychosis.

This potent narcotic is used to sedate violent, psychotic patients and is also used as an analgesic. In earlier times Wild Yam was used as general anaesthetic to enable fractures of the limbs to be to be manipulated and stabilised by traditional bonesetters. The tuber of Discorea dregean is generally taken orally or as a weak decoction with an adequate dose resulting in sleep within 20-30 minutes.

One ounce is equivalent to 10-15 offerings.

Little else is known about this interesting ethnobotanical. Absolutely not to be consumed.

The Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) possesses great significance in Eastern religion. Apart from its majestic beauty, the Nelumbo nucifera Lotus is held sacred because of the mystical effects it can produce.

Nelumbo nucifera was often smoked or made into a tea with the idea that it would create a feeling of joy that permeated the mind and body. The flower of the Sacred Lotus was immortalized in Homer's The Odyssey, in which Ulysses and his crew come ashore on the Island of the Lotus-Eaters.

The tubers that form at the bottom of the plant in the winter were and are commonly used as food my Native American tribes and in Japan.

We sell dried petals of the Sacred Lotus flower, which resemble tobacco leaves in appearance and texture and Sacred Lotus seeds.

To grow Nelumbo nucifera Sacred Lotus from seed, file down one side of the seed with sand paper until there is a small amount of white color showing and place the seed in water. The Sacred Lotus seed should swell over the next few days and sprout within a week, growing quickly for the next couple of weeks. There are enough nutrients in the Nelumbo nucifera seed to support the plant for 30 days, but it should be planted as soon as practical. Plant in a pot with plenty of room for root growth below and around the seed (at least 4 inches) and place in water with the top of the pot between 12 and 18 inches below the surface of the water. Leaves will appear within a month and the plant should bloom in the second growing season.
