Hawaiian Ayahuasca Vine ( Banisteriopsis caapi
Our Hawaiian strain of the caapi vine was started by Terrence McKenna, who brought the caapi back from Peru. It has been grown on McKenna's ethnobotanical preserve on the island of Hawaii, where he lived for many years before he died.
In Amazonia, the dried leaves of Banisteriopsis caapi are smoked. The Witotos powder the leaves and smoke them as a hallucinogen.
The shaman of South America believe that through the influence of Ayahuasca, they can coverse with the inhabitants of the spirit world, turn into jaguars, and perceive the future.
"...the Indians believe [Ayahuasca] can free the soul of corporeal confinement, allowing it to wander free and return to the body at will. The soul, thus untrammeled, liberates its owner from the realities of everyday life and introduces him to wonderous realms of what he considers reality and permits him to communicate with his ancestors".
